One love/hate feature among laptops having a glossy screen. Glossy screens are great because they look good and help the colors being displayed look crisper and nicer. However they reflect light like crazy, get smudged very easily, can be hard to clean and can be a pain to see when they are used outside unless you are in the shade.. Matte screens have a surface that is covered in millions of small riffs (think Teflon) so it doesn't smudge easily and is easy to clean. These small riffs also defuse some of the light that hits the LCD panel, this cuts down on reflection. however, this diffusion can make colors look not as crisp.
SchneiderMan at www.macrumors.com took some great pictures of a direct comparison of a matte screen MacBook wand a glossy screen MacBook:
Left is a matte screen, right is a glossy screen. Pictured outdoors in indirect sunlight.

"Matte or Gloss screen?"
A choice you have to make when you buy a laptop. Although? I think most people don't even make it into an issue. Don't even think about it.
I do. And in the beginning I was a strong supporter for Matte. But then I also worked with a gloss-screen for a while and must admit that I enjoy the colors when I worked when the sun was down.
My conclusion is that both screen had their pro's and cons. Mostely I work in quite a dark office so I wouldn't mind a gloss-screen.
